Close to a year after the roundabout at 35th Ave. and O St. was completed, the Weld County Board of Commissioners and officials from the City of Greeley have entered into an Intergovernmental Agreement (IGA) for the construction of another roundabout at the intersection of 59th and O St. The City of Greeley is the lead agency on the project, which is currently in its early design stage. The design is being performed by JR Engineering. Construction is anticipated to begin next year.

Under the IGA(PDF, 2MB), Weld County will contribute $1,669,565 to assist with construction costs, while Greeley is responsible for the project’s construction.

“Just as Greeley contributed $1.6 million to help us construct the roundabout at 35th Ave. and O St., we’re pleased to help the city offset some of the costs for this roundabout, which we believe will reduce delays and make the intersection safer and more efficient,” said Mike Freeman, Weld County Commissioner Chair. “This is always the goal with road projects we’re involved in, and we believe this will benefit residents as Weld County and Greeley continue to grow and traffic demand will likely increase.”

Roundabouts are often proposed following increased use of an intersection and have been shown to better promote the flow of traffic. They’ve also been shown to reduce serious accidents and fatalities, according to data from the Federal Highway Administration. Use of the intersection at 59th Ave. and O St. is significant, with more than 11,000 vehicles utilizing the intersection daily, according to data from the Weld County Department of Public Works.

The project will also include milling existing asphalt and applying new asphalt from the intersection of 59th Ave. and O St. to Highway 392. Greeley and Weld County share jurisdiction of the road and have agreed to a 50/50 cost-share to complete the improvement.
