Grant to assist with intersection project

Highway 392 and Weld County Road 37 intersection

A $2 million grant will help offset costs related to improving the intersection of State Highway (SH) 392 and Weld County Road (WCR) 37, located south of Eaton. The funds, administered by the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT), were accepted last week by the Weld County Board of Commissioners as part of an Intergovernmental Agreement.

The project, identified as a capital improvement by the Weld County Department of Public Works, will center on improving safety and efficiency. The intersection will be widened and include additional turning lanes to make turning easier for large trucks. Approximately 10,480 vehicles use the intersection daily. The improvements will also aim to lessen broadside and rear-end accidents, which have become more common at the intersection in the past five years.

“With continued growth expected for Weld County, road projects like these are important to ensure our transportation infrastructure can continue to move the traveling public safely and efficiently,” said Kevin Ross, Weld County Commissioner Chair. “Grants like these are helpful in ensuring taxpayer dollars have the greatest benefit possible.”

“With many trucks using the intersection, wider turning radiuses and shoulders were identified as improvements to reduce accidents,” said Curtis Hall, Weld County Public Works Director. “We’re pleased to have CDOT’s support moving forward.”

Bettering county intersections along SH-392 will be a priority in the coming years. Currently, Public Works has six projects identified in its five-year capital improvement projects plan involving the highway, and traffic counts show intersections that cross SH-392 are some of the most used in the county.

The project planned for SH 392 and WCR 37 is budgeted at $5.6 million and in its early stages. Public Works, which is serving as the project manager, is looking for a design firm to assist with designing the intersection improvements. Construction is expected to begin in 2027 and will be completed by an outside contractor.
