In order to recognize and honor Weld County residents living in nursing homes and assisted living facilities, the Board of County Commissioners has proclaimed October as Long-Term Care Residents’ Rights Month.

More than 700 individuals living in eight nursing homes, and nearly 1,000 individuals living in 24 assisted living facilities call Weld County home. Residents living in these communities are protected by the 1987 Nursing Home Reform Law which gives them rights such as being fully informed of available services and the charges for those services, the right to complain, the right to participate in one’s own care, the right to visits, and the right to privacy and confidentiality. Long-Term Care Residents’ Rights Month is an opportunity to focus on promoting and protecting these rights.

Weld County Deputy Director of Human Services, Tami Grant, spoke during the board meeting on Monday, October 2 when the proclamation was read, and took the time to recognize the staff within the Ombudsman Program through the Area Agency on Aging (AAA) who work to preserve rights for long-term care residents. “This year’s theme, ‘Amplify Our Voices,’ helps us to encourage residents to be outspoken about their preferences and choices,” said Grant. “We appreciate the opportunity to highlight this within our own community.”

Commissioner Scott James offered his sincere admiration for the work the AAA team does year-round. “Thank you so much for the services you provide for our wisest citizens,” said James. “We appreciate your care.”
