To recognize efforts around the country that help families stay together, and to celebrate the accomplishments of those families who have overcome an array of challenges to reunify safely and successfully, the Weld County Board of County Commissioners has proclaimed June Reunification Month.

Reunification of children and youth with their families after foster care is the overarching goal of the Weld County Department of Human Services, and this year’s theme is “We Believe in the Resiliency and Strength of Families.” In 2022, 61% of closed child welfare cases resulted in reunification, and so far in 2023 that number is at 51%.

Commissioner Scott James was visibly moved during Wednesday’s proclamation reading. “Families are messy.  I know that certainly from personal experience,” he said. “Second chances are deserved. Thank you for providing those.”

During the June 7 board meeting, there was also a moment reserved to recognize Caesar Varela Martinez, a father who was able to successfully reunify with his children. His family remains intact thanks to his hard work and dedication.

Weld County’s official celebration of National Reunification Month is forthcoming on June 23, where stories of successful reunification will be shared with judges, child welfare staff, service providers, attorneys, and guardians ad litem (GALs).

Weld County recognizes the important role community partners play in helping to reunify, strengthen, and support families. Coverage of Reunification Month will continue on Weld County’s social media pages throughout the month of June, and more information on foster care services in Weld County can be found at https://www.weld.gov/Government/Departments/Human-Services/Foster-Care.
