She sent dark menacing clouds for weeks, dumped inches of rain and even pelted it with hail on many occasions, but Mother Nature couldn’t quite put a stop to work being done on Two Rivers Parkway – but she has delayed a portion of it.

During the board meeting of Weld County Commissioners on Wednesday, June 28, 2023, staff from the county’s public works department requested a three-week extension of the existing closure of Two Rivers Parkway – but only for a portion the parkway that extends from WCR 378 to

WCR 54/37th St. Two Rivers Parkway from State Highway 60 to WCR 378 will be opened as planned on July 1. Commissioners approved the closure extension through July 21 to allow crews to finish work on the section north of WCR 378.

“The unusual spring weather this year has been a challenge for this project,” said Public Works Director Curtis Hall. “Our crews have done a great job moving forward and working as efficiently as possible to get this project completed and the road open. High-water issues along the parkway caused trash and debris to flow onto the project, which crews had to spend time to remove. The high waters also necessitated the need to haul additional materials to the project to rework some areas.”

“I want to commend our crews for all the work they’ve been putting in – not just on this project, but on all of the emergency road closures we’ve had in the county caused by flooding. They were able to get half of the Two Rivers project completed by the deadline, and I know they are working hard to get this road open as quickly and safely as possible,” said Commissioner Kevin Ross, coordinator for the public works department.

The Two Rivers Parkway project is the first true full-maintenance project of the parkway since it was built 25 years ago and has included culvert replacements, bridge rehabilitations, rebuilding road subgrade and new pavement.

“It looks like a brand-new road,” said Hall. “Drivers will immediately notice improvements all along the parkway. And with the work we have done and are completing, the hope is that we won’t need to do this type of major maintenance on it for another 25 years. We appreciate the public’s patience while we work to finish it up.”
