10 children to be adopted on Weld County Adoption Day
Published on November 18, 2022
Friday, Nov. 18, 2022, has been proclaimed as Weld County Adoption Day by the Board of Commissioners. It will be celebrated by finalizing 10 adoptions of children and youth into their forever homes.
Weld County Adoption Day is recognized to not only celebrate adoptions but also raise awareness of youth in foster care who are waiting to be adopted, to showcase the importance of giving youth safe and loving families and to encourage individuals to make a difference in the lives of children and youth through both foster and adoption.
“As an adoptive dad myself, it means the world to me to sign this proclamation and not only honor the work that our Department of Human Services (DHS) staff does alongside instrumental community partners, but also those families that are opening their hearts and their homes,” explained Commissioner Chair Scott James.
DHS Post Adoption Support, known as Family Forever, strives to provide families with a safe place to receive support and obtain resources to help strengthen their adoptive family and ensure the well-being of all members of the household. Families who have adopted children (through any type of adoption) and live in Weld County, and families who have adopted from the Weld County Child Welfare system and live elsewhere, are eligible for Family Forever services.
The board also honored and sincerely thanked the Walker Family — a foster family in Weld County for over a decade who’s focus has been to help medically fragile children. The Walkers have adopted nine children and have 13 kids in total.
“The Walkers have a passion for medically fragile children, and, with both Jennifer’s and Kurt’s professional nursing backgrounds, they excel at the care they provide in their home. Kurt and Jennifer are fierce advocates for all their children, making sure they receive a proper education, therapeutic services they need, and space to ‘just be kids,’” said Jamie Ulrich, Director of DHS. “Even though their time with Weld County Foster Care is winding down, their legacy of love will continue here in Weld County.”
The Walkers will be celebrating Weld County Adoption Day as well by finalizing the adoptions of two more children, bringing the total number of children’s lives forever changed to 15.
Many children and teens who are adopted from the child welfare system are adopted by their foster parents. Weld County is currently in need of foster families. The next foster care orientation is on Thursday, Dec. 15, 2022, from 4:30 – 6 p.m. For more information or to register, visit www.weldgov.com/go/fostercare.
