James Welch, District 3 County Councilman, is a fourth generation resident of Weld County and resides south of Kersey.  James graduated from University High School in 1990 and from the University of Colorado in Boulder in 1993 with degrees in Chemistry and Mathematics.  He worked 3 years in the pharmaceutical industry as a research chemist identifying and developing potential therapeutic compounds.  In 1997 James joined Hach Company as a research chemist developing chemical methods for measuring compounds in water.  James continues to work at Hach and has held a variety of roles including Regulatory Affairs Coordinator, Trainer, Technical Support Manager and currently works as a Customer Support Manager supporting water professionals around the globe.

Believing that serving your local community is not only a responsibility but an honor, he has served in a variety of roles.  James has been committed to the youth of the community by serving as a member of the Platte Valley RE-7 school board, school finance committee and has served for 14 years on the school districts accountability committee.  He has also served as a youth mentor for the Jobs of Hope program in Greeley.  James has also been committed to serving his larger community by serving on the Weld County Planning Commission from 2004 through 2007 and recently served in 2018 on the Weld County Ad-Hoc Charter Review Committee which recommended 9 proposed amendments to the County Charter, all of which were successfully passed by the voters.
