Weld County, Colorado — The Weld County Department of Public Health and Environment (WCDPHE) this week achieved 5-year reaccreditation through the national Public Health Accreditation Board (PHAB). The national accreditation program works to improve and protect the health of the public by advancing and transforming the quality and performance of local public health departments. The Weld County Health Department is 1 of 8 accredited health departments in Colorado. WCDPHE was initially accredited in 2016.

“We are pleased and excited that the Health Department is recognized for achieving national standards that foster effectiveness and promote continuous quality improvement,” said Mike Freeman, Board of Weld County Commissioners, and current Commissioner Coordinator for WCDPHE. “The reaccreditation process helps to ensure that the programs and services we provide are as responsive as possible to the needs of our community. With reaccreditation, the Health Department is demonstrating increased accountability and credibility to the public, funders, elected officials, and partner organizations with which we work.”

To receive reaccreditation, a health department must undergo a rigorous, multi-faceted, peer-reviewed assessment process to ensure it meets or exceeds a set of quality standards and measures. “Whenever you see our seal of accreditation, you will know that WCDPHE has been rigorously examined and achieves national standards for public health practice,” said Eric Aakko, WCDPHE Division Director and Accreditation Coordinator. “By continuing to improve our services and performance, we can increase our efficiency and effectiveness in meeting the public health needs of our growing county.”

The Weld County Health Department provides a range of services, from immunizations to birth and death certificates, restaurant food safety, air and water quality monitoring, youth tobacco use prevention, disease outbreak investigations, and much more.
