Man gets his annual checkup at the doctor's office

Weld County, Colorado — Celebrated during June, Men's Health Month is an annual observance that raises awareness of preventable health problems and encourages early detection and treatment of disease among men. This month, the Weld County Department of Public Health and Environment (WCDPHE) encourages men and their families to take control of male health issues with proper screenings and care.

Men on average die almost five years earlier than women. That's partly because men are more reluctant to seek help or care, according to menshealthmonth.org. It's important for men to get regular checkups to know what good health means for them. That way, they can listen to their bodies and know when to prioritize their health. Here are some good tips for all men to keep in mind:

  • General Health: Even if you don't feel sick, it is important to see your doctor regularly for checkups and annual exams.
  • Medications: Take medications as directed; keep a complete list of medications and dosages handy. Always inform any doctor you visit about your medications.
  • Vaccinations: Keep up with recommended shots, including for flu, shingles, pneumonia, and diphtheria/tetanus.
  • Healthy Eating: Older men have specific dietary needs. They need more calcium, vitamin D, fiber, and potassium. The American Dietetic Association recommends limiting fat calories to 20-35% of the diet. Additionally, men should try to incorporate 30 minutes of physical activity 5 times a week into their schedule.
  • Sun Safety: Up to 50% of Americans who live to age 65 will have at least one skin cancer, and Caucasian men are particularly at risk. Avoid the sun during peak hours from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., wear a hat and sunglasses, and liberally apply SPF 30 or greater sunscreen to all exposed skin.
