Safe Sleep Campaign

Baby asleep on back in crib

The Weld County “Safe Sleep Campaign” is designed to educate parents and the public on how to prevent infant suffocation.  The “Safe Sleep Campaign” is a partnership of the Weld County Department of Human Services, Weld County Department of Public Health and Environment, Weld County Coroner, and Lutheran Family Services Rocky Mountain.

Babies under one years old are at risk for suffocation while:

  • Sharing a bed
  • Sleeping on their side or stomach
  • Sleeping with blankets, toys, or other items in their crib
  • Sleeping on couches, in chairs, or places unfamiliar to the baby

To prevent Sudden Unexpected Infant Death (SUID), the leading cause of injury-related death in infants, practicing safe sleep is very important. Many caregivers may not be aware of the safest ways to put babies to sleep recommended by the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP). Click through below to see these recommendations and other safety resources so you can safely put babies to sleep.

AAP Recommendations

Here are some tips and recommendations from the American Academy of Pediatrics:

  • Share a room but not a bed with your baby
  • Put babies to sleep in a bassinet or crib with bars spaced no more than the width of a soda can
  • Make sure babies are on their backs, not their stomach or side
  • Remove all items from the crib (including pillows, bumpers, blankets, toys, etc.)
  • Use a pacifier at sleep time
  • Properly dress babies for sleep, but prevent them from overheating
  • Protect babies from exposure to tobacco smoke or vapor
  • If you can, breast feed your baby

ABC's of Safe Sleep

Safe sleep can be as easy as remembering ABC: Alone, Back, Crib. ABC Safe Sleep

A - Alone

Babies should always sleep alone in a crib or bassinet. Sleeping with an adult, other child, or anything in their crib increases risk for suffocation and death. It is smart to sleep in the same room as your baby, but not the same bed.

B - Back

Babies should always be put to bed on their backs. Putting a baby to sleep on their side or stomach increases risk for Sudden Unexpected Infant Death. Once a baby is able to roll over on their own, then it is safe to let them sleep in other positions.

C - Crib

Babies should always be in their own empty crib or bassinet with a firm, flat sleeping surface. Instead of keeping a blanket in a crib, put the baby to bed in a sleep sack or one piece sleeper. Never out a baby to sleep in or on a swing, recliner, rocker, couch, adult bed, or soft mattress or surface.
