Enteric Diseases Enteric diseases are illnesses that affect the gastrointestinal (GI) system caused by bacteria, viruses, or parasites and are typically characterized by diarrheal illness. Foodborne and waterborne illnesses often fall into the category of enteric disease.
Vaccine Preventable Diseases Vaccine preventable diseases are illnesses caused by viruses or bacteria for which vaccines are widely available. Examples of vaccine preventable diseases are meningococcal disease, pertussis, varicella (chicken pox) and COVID-19.
Vector-borne Diseases Vector-borne diseases are distinguished by their ability to be transmitted to humans and other animals through arthropods such as mosquitos, fleas, and ticks. Vector-borne diseases may include West Nile virus, tularemia, and Rocky Mountain spotted fever.
Zoonotic Diseases Zoonotic diseases are illnesses that are spread between animals and people. Examples of zoonotic diseases would be mpox, plague, and Q fever. We work closely with the Environmental Health Zoonosis team for some reports of these illnesses.
