What is an Epidemiologist (Epi)?

Epidemiologists investigate, detect, and prevent communicable diseases and outbreaks, like a disease detective. These tasks are completed through collecting, analyzing, and reporting disease data; providing education and prevention recommendations regarding communicable disease to community partners and the public; and responding to public health threats related to or involving potential spread of disease. To support disease control, epidemiologists perform a variety of activities including:

  • Tracking reports of illness through the statewide communicable disease database (this activity is also called surveillance)
  • Calling sick Weld County residents to investigate the potential source of their sickness, collect data, and provide information on preventing the spread of illness to others.
  • Monitoring local trends in diseases for increases that may indicate un- or under-controlled spread.
  • Addressing questions from the public and community partners about diseases and prevention strategies.
  • Reporting potential outbreaks to the state health department to contribute to widespread surveillance efforts.
  • Providing information on appropriate disinfection procedures
  • Providing notification letters and educational materials to community partners who need to pass information to the public after a known illness exposure.
  • Providing educational outreach for individuals and businesses.
