Bruce Barker, the County Attorney, serves as legal advisor for the Board of County Commissioners and all departments and divisions of Weld County government. When directed by the Board, the County Attorney represents Weld County, county officers, county employees, and appointed boards and commissions and their members in suits, actions and other legal proceedings.
There are nine full-time assistant county attorneys who assist with the duties of the County Attorney. Tate Costin, Krea Sledge, Ashley Hughes, Shannon O'Keefe, and Tammy Love are assigned primarily to the Human Services Division and handle cases under the Children’s Code, including dependency and neglect cases and child support enforcement. Karin McDougal, Deputy County Attorney, Matthew Conroy, Adria Schiel, and Byron Howell are assigned primarily to the General Services Division and render advice to the elected county officials, handle matters in litigation, and work on other matters assigned by the County Attorney.
The Department of Law is prohibited from giving legal advice to the general public.
