In general, Print on Demand (POD) is a process that allows for certain license plates to be printed upon customer request/demand instead of having inventory sitting on county shelves.
The Department of Revenue, working with the County Clerk and Recorders, has determined that low usage and certain other license plates would be POD. These include Group Special, Alumni, Military and other low demand plates like SMM Exempt and Horseless Carriage.
The real benefit of POD is that unlike today, when a constituent desires one of the low issuance license plates and the license plate is not on hand at the county, the constituent will no longer have to choose another license plate or make a second trip into the county when the plate is recovered from another county to provide to this constituent.
