The Weld County Board of Commissioners and the Department of Human Services (DHS) hosted a legislative forum on Thursday, Nov. 9, at the Weld County Administration Building to share topics directly related to human services issues.
Members of the Weld County delegation were invited to the presentation by Director of DHS Jamie Ulrich and her leadership team who highlighted potential legislation and other issues that could impact human services programs in the future. Among those in attendance were State Representative Mary Young and Colorado Senators Barbara Kirkmeyer and Byron Pelton.
“We are proud of the work we do in Weld County and strive to continue to meet our mission to engage and partner with the community to improve the safety, health and well-being of individuals and families through the delivery of responsive and collaborative services,” said Ulrich. “Our vision is that the people of Weld County are connected to the resources needed to thrive in the community and feel safe and empowered.”
The forum was an opportunity to present information on many Weld County programs and the continued positive impact DHS has serving the community’s children, families, and older adults. The presentation also provided a chance to recognize some major wins such as the selection of five Child Welfare Interim Committee bills, and particularly the Children’s System of Care bill, which Weld County collaborated on with Colorado Counties, Inc. and the Colorado Human Services Directors Association.
While successes were a focal point, the forum was also a time to outline the serious challenges faced at both state and federal levels regarding funding risks. Ulrich and other DHS leaders spoke about potential legislation that could offer solutions to future funding challenges and urged officials to support these proposed legislations, and to continue advocating for much-needed services for children, adults, and families.
